March Observances
Women’s History Month – March is internationally recognized as a time to honor women’s achievements across history, culture, politics, science, arts, and literature — and to spotlight the ongoing push for gender equality and representation. This observance invites reflection, education, and celebration of women’s contributions past and present
Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month – This month raises awareness and understanding of developmental disabilities and promotes inclusion, accessibility, and support for individuals and families.
National Nutrition Month – Celebrates healthy eating and lifestyle choices, often inspiring communities to share resources, host talks, and encourage wellness through food-focused programming.
Zero Discrimination Day (March 1) – Observed globally, Zero Discrimination Day calls attention to the right of every person to live with dignity, equality, and freedom from discrimination. Originally launched by UNAIDS, the day highlights how bias — whether based on race, gender, disability, health status, or identity — undermines individual wellbeing and collective progress.
Saint Patrick’s Day (March 17) – Saint Patrick’s Day is widely recognized as a celebration of Irish culture, community, and heritage. It’s also full of fascinating historical nuance: Saint Patrick wasn’t Irish – he was born in Roman Britain – and the original color associated with the holiday was blue, not green.
Eid al-Fitr (March 19–20, 2026) – Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan and is celebrated with gratitude, prayer, generosity, and community. The name translates to “Festival of Breaking the Fast.” Traditions often include family gatherings, special meals, and giving zakat al-fitr (charitable donations).
National Reading Month – is a nationwide celebration every March that encourages children, families, and communities to make reading a daily habit.
March marks a powerful season of transition, renewal, and cultural celebration — in many places it heralds the arrival of spring, symbolizing growth, rebirth, and fresh beginnings as days begin to lengthen and nature awakens. It also encourages people to reflect, celebrate diverse traditions, and engage with causes through observances like International Women’s Day, World Storytelling Day, and community awareness campaigns, making it a month of hope, connection, learning, and forward momentum.
